What is HBA, NIC and CNA? What is difference between them?

  1. HBA - A HBA, or Host Bus Adapter, is the interface card which connects a host to a Storage Area Network. Presently, the phrase Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is frequently used for FC and iSCSI adapter.

    CNA - CNA is converged network adapter designed to run multiple protocol i.e. FC, iSCSI, Ethernet on single interface port. CAN can be used to connect host with SAN as well as normal computer network.

    NIC - A network interface controller is a computer hardware component that connects a computer to a computer network. The controller may also be referred to as a network adapter, or a LAN adapter

  2. HBA is Host Bus Adapter for 2.4.8 GB speed, NIC is NIC card for 10/100/1000 MB and CNA is Conversional NEtwork adapter.

    HBA: Primarily it is used for Storage adapter for managing and mainting storage iops. Servers with SAN storage connected with HBA adapter by using a FC GBIC of 2,4 or 8GB speed.

    NIC: Network interface card is used for network adapter for managing a maintaing a network iops and its a media to connect a device to private or public network.

    CNA: Conversion NEtwork Adapter is a multipupose card that has used for NEtwork & Storage together. This card has diefferent infrastructure it is connected to a FCoE Switch and from switch 1GB ports goes to network and 4 and 8 GB GBIC ports used for Storage.
